SUP11 City Tour Day 1
The 10th edition of the SUP11 City Tour started in the city of Leeuwarden on the evening of the 4 September. Over 100 people representing 28 countries set out on the water dressed up to represent their countries (in their flags or traditional dress). Every SUPtember SUP11 City Tour event brings paddlers from every category together, whether you are an elite, master, open, woman, man, casual, kiddie or even part of the crew, we are united through SUP.
SUP11 City Tour has a special history; some of you may know the history, but many of you don’t. Anne-Marie Reichman started this madness 10 years ago. Anne-Marie was a professional windsurfer and traveled the world competing in international events. She loved the connection through sport and wanted to find a way to bring this back to her home country, doing a sport she loved – SUP. She spent many months planning the first event, gathered her friends and invited some competent paddlers and it began!
This is now the 10th year of the SUP11 City Tour! Anne-Marie commented that her mind has been blown by the growth and development of her event. SUP is one of the world’s fastest growing sports and this is shown in the evolution of this event. Today we had 28 countries participating and over 10000 viewers from around the world. This event is world class, a paddler starts and goes through a pattern of “battle, die, survive”. Once a person has battled, died a survived – they want more, and come back again and again!
This race is notorious for wild weather, but this year was completely different! We started with 151 people on the water. For many the start was hard, there were many paddlers starting fast and hard and this created choppy water… many paddlers fell!
Plastic Tides are a team of 2 passionate eco-warriors Christian and Gordan that flew in from California to paddle and clean! Plastic Tides are with us to help us realise the disaster of plastic in the world. As they paddle they collect plastic, and other rubbish in the canals (which is surprisingly more than anticipated). Help us save the planet and join us in our mission to not use plastic, and pick up anything you see.
SUP11 City Tour is about friends, family and of course let’s not forget racing. The women here are currently very strong in the world rankings. Two of our top competitors, Seychelle and Yuka battled it out today. They are currently placed 4th and 5th in the world and this race can help determine who is 4th or 5th! Seychelle paddled a hard race and came in first, let’s see what this week brings.
Today was magic, please take a look at the results below as well as the LIVE SHOW (a new edition).
